The Review about Vincent Herring Custom Model 6L By Paul Weisenfeld
I just received my Vincent Herring alto mouthpiece from Ken Okutsu. I have to say, YES BELIEVE THE HYPE. I’m an advanced amateur player and I’ve tried dozens of mouthpieces, both vintage and modern. I’ve been using a 1954 NY Meyer #5. It’s a classic, expensive mouthpiece that helps you get close to the Cannonball or Sonny Stitt sound. I ordered Ken Okutsu’s Vincent Herring mouthpiece on a fluke because I love Herring’s sound and I read on the web that he converted from a Meyer to the Okutsu. I wasn’t, however, expecting the Okutsu piece to be so fabulous. It’s HANDS DOWN BETTER than my vintage Meyer. Simply put, it sings with clarity and precision. The sound is controllable and the intonation is spot on across the range. If you’re going for a sound like Cannonball, Sonny Stitt or Vincent Herring, this is the piece for you in my humble opinion. Your search is over.
